Why does C4 offer hemp testing, and how is it different from potency (cannabinoid) testing?

These different tests require two separate runs at two separate concentrations. At a standard concentration for CBD, we’re ensuring the test is accurate within our cal-curve. At a higher concentration, we can achieve clarity and accuracy on trace elements, such as THC. These two concentrations help us accurately assert the level of CBD and the level of THC in your product.

What tests do you provide?

Are there additional requirements for microbial testing?

Microbial testing requires separately packaged samples. QPCR testing requires a sample of at least 2 grams. All other microbial testing requires a sample of at least 1 gram.

Where can C4 accept samples from?

We can accept shipments of hemp-derived CBD samples from anywhere in the world. See below for details on how to send samples to our lab.

How can I send my sample to you?

Samples can be shipped to our lab, dropped off in person, or picked up if you’re in the Phoenix metro area.

Before you send your sample:

All tests must be ordered through your Confident Cannabis account before any shipments are sent to our lab. Your account must be set up with all the necessary information before ordering your first test or mailing a sample into our lab.

To ship a sample:

C4 Labs accepts shipments of hemp-derived CBD from anywhere in the world. We recommend using USPS for flower samples and USPS or FedEx for other hemp products. Follow the steps below to make sure we receive a viable sample.

  1. Package and secure your samples so they do not leak.
  2. Use light-proof packaging, such as mylar bags.
  3. If extreme temperatures may be an issue, choose overnight shipping to limit exposure.
  4. Ensure the documentation in your Confident Cannabis account is up to date. Specifically, include certified proof that your product is hemp stalk, your current license in the state in which you operate, OR previous test results that show your product contains less than 0.3% THC.
  5. Label your samples to match the labels on the Chain of Custody.
  6. Please identify testing requirements for each sample. (For example, if hemp should be reported as moisture still intact, or if hemp should be reported as a dry weight, or other specifications in mind.)

From the Agricultural Improvement Act of 2018:

453.37 Hemp-based Products
For purposes of this section, “hemp” shall have the meaning provided under federal law, including Section 10113 of the Agricultural Improvement Act of 2018, Pub. L.115-334 (7 U.S.C. § 1639o), or any successor provision.

Hemp and hemp-based products, including cannabidiol (CBD) with the tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) concentration of such hemp (or its derivatives) not exceeding a 0.3 percent limit are permitted to be mailed only when:

a. The mailer complies with all applicable federal, state, and local laws (such as the Agricultural Act of 2014 and the Agricultural Improvement Act of 2018) pertaining to hemp production, processing, distribution, and sales; and

b. The mailer retains records establishing compliance with such laws, including laboratory test results, licenses, or compliance reports, for no less than 2 years after the date of mailing.

Drop-off for Arizona residents:

Samples may be dropped off at our Mesa lab Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Walk-ins are welcome.

Free sample pickup is available within 25 miles of our lab. Sample pickup outside of that radius is available for an additional fee. Contact us for details.

Do you have a FedEx business account I can use?

We don’t at this time, but we’re working to set one up in the future.

Why do test results matter?

Due to a lack of regulation and consistent standards in the CBD industry, it is critical that businesses and customers are well educated about their products. One way to ensure safety, quality, and potency is with analytical test results. This testing ensures contaminants such as foreign material, mildew, mold, or other harmful substances like pesticides are not present so the products can be used safely and effectively.

How do I know if my sample is safe for consumption?

C4 screens for many contaminants, but we can’t certify a sample is free of all contaminants. We certify that the samples pass our screening procedures for the contaminants for which we test — the ones that pose the greatest safety concerns — but there may be other unsafe aspects for which we don’t test. For some tests, such as our residual solvent screen, we list safety limits for jurisdictions where they’re available.
